Many of Winslow Homer's paintings give a strong representation of the American character. Winslow Homer was most famous for his collection of artwork of sea storms. But as the New York Times subtely states, Winslow Homer was indeed a recluse most of his life similar to Emily Dickenson. On the second museum connection we see the American character wants to escape reality at one point. Is the reason the American characters wanted to escape reality because the authors / painters escape in their own writing? Maybe the American character is very human after all, that it is not just a character being a tragic hero of a story, but instead the base of real emotion and mortality.
